Today, the Jackson CEO cohort had the opportunity to visit For Kids’ Sake International and learn firsthand what it looks like to lead with purpose and impact.

We were hosted by Shema Ruperto, Executive Director of FKSI, who shared powerful stories from her visits to Bangladesh—stories that revealed both the depth of poverty and the incredible hope created through intentional service. FKSI’s mission to provide basic needs, access to education, and long-term sustainability through local cottage industries is transforming thousands of lives across some of the world’s poorest communities.

What stood out most was the reminder that nonprofits and small businesses share many similarities—managing finances, leading people, planning events, and building systems that last. Purpose may drive the mission, but strong leadership and strategy sustain the work.

We wrapped up the visit by heading downstairs to Long Branch Cafe and Market, a local staple with deep roots in the community. Long Branch has been serving Carbondale for 26 years, with the market operating for 13 years before recently merging the two—an inspiring example of growth, adaptation, and longevity.

A full-circle moment of global impact, local business, and leadership lessons in action.
